CCR Question #1 Draft

One of the conventions of my genre that I used in my project is the concept of time manipulation in the film. The film uses this concept in the form of time loops as a part of the plot of the film which is seen at the very end of the scene through the use of discontinuous editing. For example, at the scene when the main character is seen sleeping on the bed, there are very short cuts of the tree he sees in his dream that is later seen at the end of the film before he wakes up again. This is an indication that he has seen this dream before in a past iteration of his time loop, showing the use of time loops as foreshadowing. This time loop concept is further exemplified when the main character makes a mistake by falling down onto the sidewalk. This is followed by multiple short takes of the character waking up into the scene showing his previous time loops before it cuts to black. After that, the scene ends with a fade-in with the main character waking up again in another loop. This shows the use of time loops as a plot device as the hacker uses it against him where time only loops when the main character encounters a mistake of his own.

Another convention of my genre that I used in my project is the use of colors in the film. For my genre, the colors of the film are used for the mood of the film. Moreover, the film uses color by transitioning the colors into grayscale tones after the main character falls onto the sidewalk. This transition shows a change in the mood of the film as the more colorless scenes of the film help show the tension of the film when his reality takes a dark turn before he wakes up in another loop. The film also uses color in costumes to portray characters. For example, the main character's darker clothing contrasts with his colorful surroundings. This is accompanied by his gloomy demeanor which is often associated with these colors. Overall, color contrast shows how the character standing out in contrast to the environment and how he feels in it as well as the mood of the film.

The last convention of my genre that I used in my project is the use of sound. One way the film uses sound is through incidental music in the film. The incidental music that plays while the main character does his morning routine is a mellow classical guitar solo. This allows the film to express a somber mood and the character's personality in the film to the audience. After this, the incidental music transitions into ominous classical music in the last parts of the film. This enhances the intensity at the turning point of the film.

The social groups that my actors are in are hackers and academic high schoolers. The hackers are represented for their intelligence in the film for their computer and programming knowledge which is seen when the hacker is making a code to successfully hack into the main character's reality. The use of green colors for text on the screen is usually associated with hackers as well as the use of computers as props. In the film, the hackers are portrayed negatively as people who are trying to harm people's lives which is seen when the hacker tries to ruin the main character's life. On the other hand, academic high schoolers are also represented through their intelligence through their academic achievements. This is seen when the main character interacts with his perfectly scored tests and his school awards. They are portrayed with gloomy personalities because it shows the dangers of investing too much into academics.
